Bring out the nachos, the chili, the nachos drenched with chili. Burgers, hot dogs. Chicken wings. Here’s a fun-to-drink and a fun-priced red wine that will encompass just about anything in the area of meaty, fleshy, fat-filled food you throw at it.
This is the Luis Marín Magnífico Garnacha 2023, from Spain’s Cariñena region, in the province of Zaragoza in Aragon, about halfway between Madrid and Barcelona. The winery was founded in 1903 and remains in the family. Little technical information is available — other than that the winemaker is Arturo Letosa — so let’s get to it. The color is dark ruby-purple with a lighter edge; scents and flavors of black cherries and currants are infused with notes of cloves and crushed cumin, some foresty earthiness and a bit of baked plum; bright acidity plows a furrow through a texture of medium heft and drape, while mild tannins provide a touch of structure; the whole enterprise is flavorful, energetic and satisfying. You’re not going to be laying this bottle down in your cellar; yer going to give it a slight chill and drink it right up and enjoy it. Very Good+. About $13, a local purchase. In some parts of the country, it’s $12.
