Pizza? Burgers? Pasta? Tapas? Fried eggs and sausage? Any dish that doesn’t require a big, deep, layered cabernet, pinot noir or syrah?
Grab a liter bottle of E’ Rosso! — the “Red Wine of the People” — from Poderi Cellario, a producer in the Langhe region of Piedmont. This is 100 percent barbera grapes, non-vintage, fermented by native yeast, aged one year in 100-hectoliter cement tanks, bottled unfiltered and unfined. One hundred hl equals 2,641.7 gallons: large vessels. “Non-vintage” means that the wine is a blend of grapes or wine from several years. “Unfined” means that it’s suitable for vegans.
The color is a radiant and almost transparent cherry-magenta hue; a powerful fragrance of red and black cherries and currants fills the nose, bolstered by notes of briers and brambles, new leather, black peppercorns and a hint of graphite; smooth as silk on the palate, fresh as a daisy and goes down easily, yet there’s a pleasing darkness and spiciness about the berry flavors. Still, let’s not worry our pretty little heads by over-analyzing; E’ Rosso! is exactly what it sets out to be — an eminently quaffable and enjoyable red wine. 13.5% alcohol. Very Good+. About $22 for a liter bottle, representing Excellent Value.
