The clay's the thing.
The clay vessels called amphorae — the singular is amphora — were used in the ancient world to ship wine and olive oil and other products to port cities throughout the Mediterranean basin. These tended to be slender, rather than bulbous, and with a bottom that came to a point, to facilitate handling. Thousands of these amphorae, some still containing residue, have been discovered in shipwrecks under the sea.
