When Piera Martelozzo took over the operation of the family winery in the early 1990s, her first step was to move the whole shebang from Padua, in the Veneto region, to Friuli, in the cooler, hillier northeast of Italy. She renamed the estate for herself and added the date 1899 in honor of the year that her grandfather had founded it, thus creating a sense of succeeding and connected generations.
